The Best of Sherlock Holmes

Tips on Using
The Sherlockian Heraldry e-Book

By Randall Stock

The Sherlockian Heraldry e-Book on CD-ROM is very easy to use, but the following background information and suggestions may be useful.

While I think these tips apply to most releases of Adobe (Acrobat) Reader, the instructions were checked using Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows, versions 5.01 and 6.0.

WHAT'S INCLUDED ON THE CD-ROM

The CD-ROM has the following files and folders:

a) Sherlockian Heraldry.pdf

This is the main file that you will use.  It has the color illustration and written description of all 221 Sherlockian Coats of Arms.

b) Sherlockian Heraldry Booklet.pdf

This is the electronic version of the printed booklet that came with the CD-ROM.  The printed booklet and this file only have the written descriptions of the Coats of Arms.  All of the information in the booklet and this file is also in the main Heraldry file noted above in 2a.

c) Cover for Sherlockian Heraldry.pdf

This is the electronic version of the artwork for this product case's cover.

d) BSDB Price List

This is a catalog of items published by The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box.

e) Graphics (folder)

This folder contains the color illustrations of the Coats of Arms in bitmap (bmp) format.  All of these illustrations are in the main Heraldry file noted above in (a).  When printing the illustrations, some users might get better results from these files.  See the Using Graphics section below for more details.

f) Acrobat (folder)

This folder contains installation files for several versions of Adobe Reader.  You might use these if you do not already have a version of Adobe (Acrobat) Reader installed on your computer or if your version is very old.  See the Adobe Reader section below for more details.

GETTING STARTED

a) You need to have Adobe (Acrobat) Reader or another PDF viewing program installed on your computer.  See the Adobe Reader section below for details.

b) You can open and use the Sherlockian Heraldry e-book directly from the CD-ROM.  You could instead copy the file to your hard disk, but it is very large and there is little benefit to putting it on your hard disk.

c) Open the Sherlockian Heraldry.pdf file and follow the suggestions below.

HOW THE BOOK IS ORGANIZED

The Sherlockian Heraldry electronic book consists of several sections.  They are in the following order:

a) Introduction

b) List of 100 Coats of Arms (Complete Achievements) with cross-references

c) List of 121 Coats of Arms (Rolls of Arms) with cross-references

d) Selected Bibliography

e) Complete Achievements: Coats of Arms (not alphabetical)

f) Rolls of Arms: Coats of Arms (not alphabetical)

Complete Achievements include the shield and all its surrounding parts.  The Rolls of Arms show only the shield.

Cross-references are to the numbered list of sources in the Selected Bibliography.

Each Coat of Arms has both a color illustration and a written description.  The illustration always appears first, and is followed by the description.  Moving to the next page after the description will take you to another illustration, but it will not be the "next" alphabetical name since they are not in order.

The Complete Achievements section begins with some especially interesting coats of arms, including Queen Victoria, Doyle, Holmes and Watson.  To see these, just go to the beginning of the book and Page Down.  They begin after page nine..

HOW TO FIND A SPECIFIC PERSON'S COAT OF ARMS

The Coats of Arms are not in alphabetical order, so it's rarely useful to just page through the Sherlockian Heraldry file.  Instead, use the Index of bookmarks in the Navigation pane to jump directly to the desired page.

a) Click on the expansion symbol (plus symbol for Windows, right-arrow for Macintosh) next to the letter of the person's last name.  Don't click the letter itself.

b) Click on the desired name in the list of names that appear.

For example, to see Sherlock Holmes's coat of arms, click on the expansion symbol next to the letter "H" and then click on the "Holmes" bookmark link.  The picture of the Holmes coat of arms appears at the top of the window.  You may need to scroll or page-down in order to see the written description for that coat of arms.

You can close the Navigation pane to provide more on-screen space.  Click on the Bookmarks tab to close the pane, and click on it again to re-open it.

MATCHING ILLUSTRATIONS WITH WRITTEN DESCRIPTIONS

Each Coat of Arms has both a color illustration and a written description.  The illustration always appears first, and is followed by the description.  Use the Index of bookmarks in the Navigation pane to jump directly to the color illustration.  You may need to scroll or page-down in order to see the description for that coat of arms.

You can close the Navigation pane to provide more on-screen space.  Click on the Bookmarks tab to close the pane, and click on it again to re-open it.

USING THE GRAPHICS FILES

The Graphics folder contains the color illustrations of the Coats of Arms in bitmap (bmp) format.  All of these illustrations are also in the main Heraldry file.

Most people will get very good results when printing from the main Heraldry PDF file.  However, depending on your printer and the size of print-out, a few people might want to use the bitmap files.

You'll need your own graphics or paint program to open these bitmap files.  The CD-ROM does not include these programs.  Refer to the your program's manual or help section for information about opening and printing bitmap files.

Please note that the coats of arms are copyright material.  You may print these for your own personal, private use.  You may not copy, reproduce, modify, distribute, post online or sell this material.

ADOBE READER VERSIONS AND WARNINGS

Most of the files on the CD-ROM are in PDF (Portable Document Format).  The Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader programs allow you to open and use PDF files. The Acrobat folder on this CD-ROM contains installation files for several versions of Adobe Reader.

If you already have Adobe (Acrobat) Reader installed on your computer you probably do not need these files.  To get the very latest version of the free Adobe Reader program, go to the Adobe website.

When opening the "Sherlockian Heraldry.pdf" file with Adobe Reader for Windows version 5.01 you may get a warning message saying "this file may contain newer information… and may not open or display correctly."  However, version 5.01 does correctly display the file on most computers.
